The Hoyer guitar name dates to 1874, with Franz Hoyer opening a shop in Schonbach, a town in what is now the Czech Republic and produced all manner of popular instruments including lutes, zithers and guitars. With the end of the Second World War, the Hoyer family had to leave Schonbach and moved into Germany. They settled in Tennelohe, near Erlanger, which like Schonbach was a major center for musical instrument building.
The Arnold Hoyer archtop Herr im Frack, or ‘Gentleman in Tails’ was introduced in the late 1940s and was popular throughout the 1950s as a professional quality guitar. These instruments were very important as quality guitars were in short supply during the long recovery from the war. This 1950s Arnold Hoyer Archtop Herr im Frack is in good playable condition, and aside from a repaired crack in the heel and a repaired crack in the top next to the bass side of the fingerboard tag, is in good physical condition.
It plays well, and sounds remarkably good. The Herr im Frack features a carved spruce top and probably laminate Maple back and sides, and a maple neck with a bound rosewood fingerboard and an ebony bridge base. The bound headstock has an inlay reading ‘Arnold Hoyer Herr im Frack’. The position marker inlays, typical of many German instruments, are the full width of the fingerboard.
The top features both a small round soundhole at the end of the fingerboard and traditional F-holes. The hardware seems original – a nickel plated trapeze tailpiece, a metal bridge with adjustable saddles, a large faux pearl pickguard, and open back strip tuners with creme plastic buttons.
The screened gold logo on the lower treble side reads “Original Arnold Hoyer nur echt mit diesem zeichen”, or “Only real with this sign”. A tech tip about this sort of decoration, which was also seen on many American guitars – cleaning the area presents a number of issues. The logo is painted directly onto the top, and there are not clear coats over top. Consequently, spraying the top with a wax or polish and rubbing the surface can easily remove all or parts of the logo! Hoyer guitars is still producing instruments, and Serial Number: N/A, but built during the 1950’s at the Hoyer shop in Erlangen, Germany. Pricing: $1,199.00 with case.
Lawman Guitars Presents. A 1950's Made in Germany Arnold Hoyer Herr im Frack Super RARE Archtop Guitar with a period correct German Framus Pickup that sounds great!!! This guitar has been traveling around Des Moines IA for awhile now.
I got it from one of my 'Pro Player Finders' and he had a lot of work done to it before I got it. The basic guitar is all original. The original head, body, Faceplate, Tuners, roller bridge and A Nickel Tailpiece. What isn't original is the electronics. The guitar already had the Framus Super Pickup installed, but the wiring was a mess. They made a new Pickguard which contains the electronics and the input jack was routed to the end pin. All very tasteful and discrete.
The electronics also has a double sound feature that allows the bass setting to be set so you have a lead and a rhythm sound at the flick of a switch. All hidden under the new pickguard which looks like the same shape as the originals. Other needed work was the neck. It needed a neck reset badly.
Terrible action. Sore fingers galore! It was done by one of our fine Iowa Luthier Shop, and they did not disappoint.
What a perfect job! This guitar plays effortlessly now with superb action up and down the neck. Barry white disco grafia download.
The top two frets have some wear and some finger divots also in the top two frets. This guitar plays and sounds fsntastic!
The Framus Pickup was quite a surprise. I thought it would be thin but it has a deep resonance that I'm sure the guitar helps.
Very strong pickup from the 1950's. This guitar is not perfection, of course. Dings and scratches, but looks great for its age. It has lots of finish crazing to corroborate this is the original finish. The Original Case is very nice, but the handle has been replaced. Ibanez Guitar Serial Number
The Hoyer family started creating instruments before the birth of Arnold Hoyer, who would eventually take over his father's business handcrafting instruments and transform the company into one that largely made arch-top guitars. Classic Hoyer guitars, which are not given names but are identified by number, include a few electric solid-body models, including the 29 (the first made my Hoyer in 1962) and the 32. The Hoyer company stopped producing guitars in 1987. While the Hoyer name has been resurrected in the 2000s, the new guitars are not being constructed by the same family or company that has long been associated with the Hoyer name.
